At Communities In Schools, we see potential in every student – and we’re committed to helping them see it, too.
It’s not always easy. Thousands of students across the country and here in Charlotte-Mecklenburg face overwhelming roadblocks to their academic and personal success. Homelessness. Bullying. The emotional effects of trauma. Untreated medical or dental conditions. A lack of school supplies and clothes. Systems and circumstances beyond their control. We’re in schools to spot and overcome the roadblocks in our students’ way.
To provide students and schools with our Comprehensive Services, CIS places full-time, trained professionals – our Site Coordinators – in selected Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools to build trust and form lasting relationships across communities. Site Coordinators work side by side with students, parents, teachers, school administrators, volunteers, and community partners to provide caring relationships and critical resources to students and families.
In addition to our Comprehensive Services, CIS-Charlotte provides Specialized Intervention services that address very specific challenges of young people in our community, including:
TRiO / Talent Search
College access and career readiness for “first-generation” students from low-income backgrounds
Safe Journey / Teen Parents
Support for teen parents (and their children) balancing the challenges of childcare and high school graduation
Newcomer Services
Supporting immigrant/refugee/ELL students
Re-Entry Program
Supporting youth that have been involved in the criminal justice system
