Adesnee Camp
Garinger High School
When Adesnee Camp reflects on her high school journey, she does so with immense pride.
A graduating senior at Garinger High School, Adesnee faced significant challenges during her high school years, including family and housing transitions that disrupted many aspects of her life. Despite these obstacles, she remained determined to keep moving forward, even during moments when graduation felt out of reach.
“There were many moments where I felt like I couldn’t keep going,” Adesnee shared. “I’m so proud of myself that I made it through.”
Throughout her journey, Communities In Schools focused on helping Adesnee strengthen her attendance, access social-emotional wellness supports, and stay on track academically. CIS Student Support Specialist Mr. Stephen Thomas worked closely with Adesnee, her family, teachers, counselors, and school social workers to ensure she had the resources and encouragement needed to succeed.
As Adesnee navigated periods of instability, Mr. Thomas helped coordinate critical supports, maintained consistent communication with school staff and family members, and provided a welcoming space where she could catch up on coursework, discuss challenges, and receive ongoing encouragement. Most importantly, he became a trusted adult who listened without judgment and continually reminded her of her strengths and potential.
“Communities in Schools became my outlet,” said Adesnee. “Mr. Thomas was always there for me and really listened. He helped me get through a lot of problems by being there to support me. I’m very grateful for always being able to go to him to discuss my academic progress, and he always pushed me to keep going and to keep working hard to achieve my goals.”
As she continued to lean into her strengths and the support around her, Adesnee transformed challenges into motivation. Her attendance improved significantly, her grades rebounded, and she emerged as one of Garinger High School’s top-performing seniors. Today, she ranks 12th in her graduating class, a testament to her resilience, determination, and commitment to her future.
Mr. Thomas shared that Adesnee often refers to him as her “trusted adult,” reflecting the meaningful connection they built through consistent support, encouragement, and care.
Now, Adesnee is preparing for her next chapter at Winston-Salem State University, where she will continue pursuing her goals and building the future she has worked so hard to create.
Every student’s high school journey is individual and unique, bringing its own challenges, setbacks, and moments of growth. Adesnee’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when resilience, determination, and support come together to help a student reach their goals.
Congratulations, Adesnee! We can’t wait to see what you accomplish next.
