In 2009, Communities In Schools formed a partnership with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) in order to better support youthful offenders who are temporarily housed at the county’s Jail facilities. The program provides these young people with continued education and counseling to get back on track to healthy behaviors, and resources to help expedite a successful transition back into a CMS school or another appropriate educational setting. At West Charlotte High School, CIS has additional efforts focused on continuing a smooth transition once back at the school and reducing recidivism. Younger siblings are also identified and targeted for CIS enrollment at their schools whenever possible.
