Dine Out for KidsCHARLOTTE, NC – Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CIS) is celebrating its 15th anniversary of Dine Out For Kids®, which falls on Tuesday, June 17 this year. Dine Out For Kids® is a community-wide event that offers area restaurants and their patrons an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to helping at-risk children stay in school and achieve in life. Participating restaurants will donate a portion of the day’s sales on June 17 to Communities In Schools. With 88 restaurant locations joining the event this year, Dine Out For Kids® is ready to dish up great food and fun for those dining out on June 17 to benefit children in need in our community.

“This is such an easy way for anyone in the community to support the students and schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg who need us most,” said May Johnston, Community Relations Director with Communities In Schools. “ You just need to eat out on June 17 at one of the participating restaurants. With 88 restaurants and locations, there’s plenty of choice to fit every appetite and budget.”

An affiliate of the national Communities In Schools dropout prevention network, CIS of Charlotte-Mecklenburg serves 6,000+ students annually in 43 CMS schools that have the greatest needs but the fewest resources. By forming partnerships with human service agencies, businesses, civic groups, faith communities, and individual volunteers, CIS connects children and families to the relationships and resources they need to be successful. • Students living in low-income families are 6 times more likely to drop out.
• A dropout is 8 times more likely to be incarcerated.
• Just one cohort of non-graduates creates tax revenue losses of over $200 billion.

And in Charlotte-Mecklenburg:
• More than 1 in 5 children live in poverty.
• Only 51% of economically disadvantaged 3rd graders were on grade level in reading and math in 2011-12.
• In 2001, there were 12 high poverty schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg; today there are 53.
