What We Do

Connecting With Kids - Programs and Services

Communities In Schools (CIS) takes a holistic approach to drop-out prevention by addressing the physical, emotional, and academic needs of children and families through a wide range of services, including:

  • Tutoring and mentoring
  • Cultural and volunteer service activities
  • Health care and counseling
  • Parent involvement workshops
  • College and post-secondary education and career services

In working with our students and families, we are guided by our philosophy of the "Five CIS Basics."

The Five CIS Basics
Communities In Schools (CIS) believes that every child needs and deserves five basic resources in order to succeed in life, including:
  • A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
  • A safe place to learn and grow
  • A healthy start – a healthy future
  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation
  • A chance to give back to peers and community

By coordinating a team of service providers and volunteers and bringing the services into the schools where the children are, Communities In Schools (CIS) addresses the problems of serving children and families in need in a comprehensive and cost-effective manner.

The success of our efforts depends a great deal on our dedicated volunteers, who tutor and mentor our students, and help with special events. We hope you’ll join Communities In Schools in our mission to help children in Mecklenburg County succeed in school and in life. Click here for more information about becoming a Volunteer with CIS.
