CIS Student, Ranson Middle School
Thoughtful, energetic, go-getter, animated, and mischievous are all adjectives that describe Raffiell, an 8th grader at Ranson Middle School. Before enrolling him in CIS, his name preceded him, says Joy Reid, his CIS Site Coordinator at Ranson. “In the 6th grade, Raffiell had a lot of extra energy that he burned off in class and in the hallways,” she explained.
Raffiell comes from a large family with eleven siblings. Two of his older brothers have been incarcerated and received services from CIS through our new collaboration with the Sheriff’s Department and Jail North. Both brothers asked their CIS counselor at Jail North to look out for Raffiell and get him involved in CIS – and learned that he had already been enrolled by Ms. Reid.
For three years now, Raffiell has participated in just about everything CIS has offered, from the Kids2College program and career shadowing, to college campus tours and the Ranson Raiders Reading Buddy program (where selected CIS students read books to Kindergarten classes at nearby Winding Springs Elementary). Raffiell recently made the A-B Honor Roll and is an office assistant for the principal. He also participates in chorus and the drama club.
“Raffiell knows he needs to be a good role model for his younger siblings and he is doing just that,” says Ms. Reid. “He has matured a great deal and now he’s channeling all that energy in the right direction. One thing’s for sure,” she added. “His enthusiasum is contagious – hopefully there’s no cure for that!”
