CIS Graduate, West Mecklenburg High School

Alexis GradyAlexis was a participant in our TRiO Talent Search program, a federally funded program for low income, first generation college-bound students that is operated locally by Communities In Schools. Alexis is a 2009 graduate of West Mecklenburg High School and is now a sophomore at East Carolina University. She recently was asked to describe how the Talent Search program has impacted her and here, in her own words, is her response:

“The Talent Search program was very beneficial to me because it helped me excel beyond the walls of the classroom. It gave me the resources and tools I needed to make smart decisions about my future. Attending college tours, info sessions about how to properly conduct yourself in business settings, financial aid workshops, community events, and much more helped me develop into the determined individual I am today.

This exposure gave me and my family the opportunity to gain knowledge of what to expect during my college years. Being the first in my immediate family to pursue a higher level of education is remarkable, but I couldn’t have done it without the help of the Talent Search program. It isn’t just a program to me, it’s like family because they offer support and guidance to promote personal growth.

I know it is because of the foundation that the CIS Talent Search program placed within me that I have maintained a 3.30 GPA and made the Honors List. Thanks to Talent Search, my future is already looking up!”
