School Tools Campaign 2009

A collaborative effort between Classroom Central, Communities In Schools, and WSOC-TV and its Family Focus Partners

The School Tools Campaign is the region's largest school supplies collection, operating in Mecklenburg and 19 surrounding counties. In Mecklenburg County, more than half of all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches,a common indicator of need. Many parents cannot afford even the most basic of school supplies for their children. During the month of August, the School Tools Campaign will collect and distribute school supplies to thousands of Charlotte's (and other counties) neediest students. Last year in Mecklenburg County alone, nearly 58,000 pounds of supplies were distributed to students in more than 100 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

The success of School Tools relies heavily on the support of individuals and businesses in the community:

Individuals
Individuals can drop off donations of supplies throughout August at area Food Lion stores, Honda Dealers of the Carolinas dealerships, and Classroom Central, 2116 Wilkinson Boulevard. Call 704-377-1740, ext. 14.

Postal Collection Day - Saturday, August 22, 2009
One of the most convenient ways for individuals to donate supplies is through "Postal Collection Day" on Saturday, August 22. U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will collect school supplies left at residential mail boxes in the following counties: Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Richmond, Rowan, and Union. A list of participating zip codes can be found on the School Tools page at www.wsoctv.com/family.
