Safe Journey & Adolescent Parenting Program (APP)

Safe Journey and the Adolescent Parenting Program (APP) are case management parenting programs for teen mothers and their children ages birth to five. These programs assist participants with completing their high school education, delaying additional pregnancies, assistance with counseling and educational resources and effective parenting skills.

Safe JourneySafe Journey is a program of Communities In Schools (CIS) and is funded by Smart Start of Mecklenburg County. Elevation Church is a collaborative partner with the Safe Journey Program.

Safe Journey and APP provides comprehensive case management services for approximately 20 teenage mothers within each of the following Charlotte-Mecklenburg high schools:   Vance, West Charlotte, Waddell and Hawthorne High Schools;  and up to 5 participants enrolled in designated feeder sites, including Garinger, Independence, Phillip O. Berry, West Mecklenburg, Olympic, and the Performance Learning Center.

Participant Eligibility:

  • Pregnant or parenting teen 19 years of age or younger
  • Enrollment in a CIS school with a commitment to complete their high school education
  • APP participants may only have one child; Safe Journey participants may be enrolled with more than one child
  • Pregnant teens may be enrolled at any stage of their pregnancy
  • Amenable to education and support to delay additional pregnancies
  • Willing to participate in educational parenting group sessions twice monthly and
  • Attend annual special event projects
  • Willing to participate in at least one monthly home visit with assigned case manager
