Volunteer Opportunities and Needs, Spring-Summer 2012

Summer is almost here - help the CIS volunteer program end the year with a strong finish!  Check out the various opportunities and needs below and see how YOU may be able to help!  For more information about any of these opportunities, contact Angela Yoo at ayoo@cischarlotte.org or 704.943.9536.

VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
Are you full of ideas that you’d like to share? Do you enjoy working with children but also want more opportunities to interact with your peers to help Communities In Schools’ mission? Would you be committed to a leadership role in the community? If you answered yes to these questions, then joining the new CIS Volunteer Leadership Council may be a great fit for you! Please scroll down to the bottom of this page to find a pdf file of the Volunteer Leadership Council Application. Download/print and complete the Application; then fax it to Angela Yoo at 704.335.0697. Application deadline is JUNE 1.

PROCTORS NEEDED!
We need your help! All elementary and middle schools will be administering end-of-year testing MAY 14-17. These tests are crucial for our students to be promoted to the next grade, and proctors are always in short supply. This is a great way to support education with an easy, one-time commitment. Testing generally takes place first thing in the morning and lasts until lunch time. If you are available to help at one of our schools, please contact Angela Yoo at ayoo@cischarlotte.org or 704-943-9536.

WIN PRIZES! END-OF-YEAR SURVEY
We want your thoughts and opinions! Let us know what we can do to improve your volunteer experience with this quick 10-question survey. Reply to this email with your name and contact information after completing the survey (using the honor system) if you would like to be entered to win a spa gift basket and two tickets to a local arts venue. Please complete the survey by JUNE 1.

END-OF-YEAR CELEBRATIONS
Celebrate the successfully completed EOG’s, as well as another entire school year, with our elementary and middle school students. The Elementary and Middle School Teams are seeking volunteers to help with their end-of-year events on the evenings of MAY 24 and JUNE 1, respectively. If you are able to join us, please contact Angela Yoo at ayoo@cischarlotte.org or 704-943-9536.

JUNE VOLUNTEER WORKSHOP
Learn to be a more effective literacy tutor. Our June volunteer workshops will feature strategies for promoting literacy for both younger and older students. One session will focus on fun, interactive games and activities volunteers can use with elementary and middle school students to improve reading comprehension. A second session for those working with middle and high school students will feature our 2012 NC Governor’s Service Award recipient, Colin Pinkney, who facilitates a book club for boys at Olympic High School.

SUMMER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Stay connected to your students over the summer! Although many of our school sites will be closed from June through August, our Project LIFT schools will be running summer programs. Site staff will need several floaters to help throughout the day. For more information, contact Angela Yoo at ayoo@cischarlotte.org or 704-943-9536.

Volunteers at certain school sites can also continue working with CIS students through Freedom School Partners (FSP). FSP has partnerships with Allenbrook, Ashley Park, Billingsville, Druid Hills, Highland Renaissance, Montclaire, Ranson, Statesville Road, Thomasboro, Walter G. Byers, and Winterfield. If you are interested in working with FSP for the summer at your school site, you can also contact Kim Dickerson at kim@freedomschoolpartners.org.

Thank you for an amazing 2011-2012 year!
