CIS wins $50,000 grant in 'Flash Philanthropy' Experiment

Molly Shaw realizes CIS has won 1st placeCommunities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CIS) participated in a bit of history-making last Friday evening May 3 at Queens University of Charlotte's commencement exercises for its graduate programs.  And even better, a $50,000 grant for CIS from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation was part of the result!

Earlier in the year, the Knight Foundation polled graduate students at Queens to discover what critical issues facing the community they deemed most important. Based on the poll results, the Knight Foundation then selected three charities - CIS, Goodwill, and Loaves and Fishes - that represented the students' top three concerns of education, jobs, and hunger.  What the students didn't know was that they would have the opportunity to participate in a "random act of philanthropy" during their upcoming graduation ceremony, by voting via text message for their top choice among these three charities.

Each charity created a 45-second video (per Knight Foundation stipulation) that the audience viewed during the commencement. Then they were told to whip out their smart phones and vote - "American Idol" style!  Communities In Schools received the most votes, and with that honor came a $50,000 grant from the Knight Foundation. Goodwill and Loaves and Fishes did not go away empty-handed, however; the Knight Foundation generously donated $25,000 to each of these as well.

Eric Newton, senior advisor to the president of the Knight Foundation, and who gave the commencement address, explained to the graduates and the audience that the Knight Foundation is committed to "raising the digital literacy rate" and wanted tonight's audience to experience first-hand the power of digital media's ability to do good.

"Doesn't it feel good to give?" Newton asked.  "Tonight, my hope is that students walk away with a clearer understanding of the incredible power of digital media," said Newton. "We have the ability, at our fingertips, to make an instant difference in the lives of those in need, and it is our responsibility as noble citizens to do just that."

Molly Shaw, Communities In Schools-Charlotte Executive Director, who attended the commencement, was naturally thrilled with the voting results.

"It was exciting to witness the voting and results in 'real time,' said Shaw. "Flash philanthropy sets a new bar - tonight was groundbreaking for this community and for philanthropy. Communities In Schools is thrilled to be a part of such innovative thinking, and we are grateful to the Knight Foundation and Queens for making this opportunity possible."

United Way features CIS Volunteer as part of National Volunteer Week, April 21-27

United Way of Central Carolinas is featuring CIS volunteer Leslie Bridger and the CIS student she tutors to help promote National Volunteer Week (April 21-27, 2013).  This past fall, United Way initiated "Project 1000," an effort to recruit 1,000 volunteers for the93 agencies United Way supports. The agency has recruited about 200 volunteers so far, including Leslie Bridger, who chose CIS as the agency she wanted to support.

Leslie works full time for United Healthcare, but every Tuesday, she spends an hour tutoring and reading with Marlin, a third grader in CIS at Montclaire Elementary School. Check out this video (below) of Leslie and Marlin to see the impact  - on both volunteer and child - that just one hour a week can have.

More volunteers are needed, especially those interested in mentoring or tutoring children and youth. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator (or call 704.943.9536) to learn how YOU can make a difference!

Meeting the Challenge: Good News from The Levine Foundation

Exciting news to report regarding the outcome of our matching gift "challenge grant" from The Leon Levine Foundation! With very generous support from you, our faithful donors and new friends and supporters, we met the $100,000 matching gift challenge set forth by the Levine Foundation. THANK YOU for helping CIS accomplish this very important financial goal and for helping us increase awareness of our mission in the community, while strengthening our ability to serve thousands of children who need CIS most. We are thrilled with the results and are so very grateful for this fantastic show of support from our donors, as well as that of The Leon Levine Foundation and its belief in our organization and the work we do.

Consistent with the Levine Foundation challenge grant, one of CIS-Charlotte's primary strategic goals is to continue our efforts to expand and diversify our donor base so that we may best serve children. We respectfully ask both our long-time donors and new friends and supporters to continue your advocacy and support of our students and share our mission with other family members, friends and colleagues. If your company, faith community or civic group would like to learn more about our work or you would like to discuss how you/your family can make a planned gift that leaves a lasting legacy of hope and support for all of Charlotte’s children, please contact Gina Salvati in our Development Office for additional information. For those who did not have a chance to participate last year in our matching gift challenge and would like to support a student today, we would greatly appreciate a gift in any amount. No gift is too small.
