On April 19, 2012, Communities In Schools-Charlotte volunteer Colin Pinkney traveled to Raleigh to receive a North Carolina Governor's Award for Volunteer Service. Pinkney was also awarded the Governor’s Medallion Award, the state’s highest level of volunteer recognition. There were only twenty Governor's Award winners across the state, including five from Mecklenburg County, one of whom was Colin Pinkney. Communities In Schools Site Coordinator Tawanda Sain-Redd (Olympic High School) and United Way of the Central Carolinas nominated Pinkney for the award, based on his volunteerism and dedication to the young men he has mentored at Olympic High School over the years. At the request of Sain-Redd, Pinkney formed a book club at Olympic for male students struggling in school. To date, 85 young men have successfully completed the program that Pinkney has developed, with a 100% high school graduation rate for participating seniors!
In addition, Communities In Schools and Safe Journey (teen mothers) program partner Elevation Church and Bank of America were group/corporate Governor's Award winners from Mecklenburg County.
Congratulations to Colin Pinkney, Elevation Church, and Bank of America for receiving this outstanding honor!
More CIS Volunteer Recognition
In related volunteer news, several more CIS-Charlotte volunteers were recognized on April 24 at the annual Mayor's Mentoring Alliance luncheon in Charlotte. Congratulations to these CIS volunteers nominated for "Mentor of the Year": Richard and Phyllis Williams (First Ward Elementary); Donald Henderson (Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle), and Becka Tait (South Mecklenburg High). CIS also congratulates Darrin Morton (nominated by another organization), who used to be a CIS volunteer at South Mecklenburg High School where he mentored a student. The student has since graduated, but Morton still keeps in touch with him. Many thanks to ALL of our volunteers who are supporting our students in so many ways!
