Helen Massey Olympic High School - 2000 Winston-Salem State University, B.A. - 2004 Strayer University - M.B.A. candidate
"The financial assistance I received for college allowed me to focus on my school work."
Helen Massey loves working with children and one day wants to own and operate a 24-hour childcare center in the Charlotte area. She knows first-hand how important it is for children of all ages to have a caring adult in their lives. Helen is quick to say that her most memorable experience with CIS is her relationship with Rodney Carr, the CIS Site Coordinator at Olympic.
“You can tell that Mr. Carr cares about young people - he takes the time to really listen,” says Helen. “In addition to guiding me academically, he shared a lot of his knowledge and general life skills with me, and helped me become a better person.”
Helen says the mentoring Mr. Carr offered didn’t end once she graduated from high school. He kept in touch with Helen while she was at Winston-Salem State University, and often asked her to speak to CIS students who were touring the campus.
Helen is also grateful for the financial assistance she received through CIS to attend college, and says this was a major factor to her success in college.
“The assistance I received through CIS relieved my financial concerns and allowed me to focus on my school work,” says Helen. Currently, Helen is a reading tutor with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She is working towards her M.B.A. degree so she will have the business background she needs when she eventually opens her own childcare center.
